Kael Reid Homepage - Bobbie Belfry Image

WELCOME!

Thank you for checking out my website. Many of you know me as Kate, but I have changed my name to Kael. I also use they/them pronouns. I still perform very occasionally but I mostly devote my time to teaching and research at York University in Toronto, Canada.

Kael’s songs and lyrics for “Out at School,” composed to layer and share the research findings in our multimedia verbatim theatre piece, captured the essence and nuances of the testimonies of the families who participated in our project. Kael’s songs are often the highlight of our performances and audience members are always taken with their beautiful voice and stunning lyrics.

About Kael Reid

Kael is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University (Toronto, Canada) where they teach in the undergraduate program in Children, Childhood, and Youth Studies. They also work on arts-based research projects with marginalized communities. As part of their research, Kael uses an innovative, participatory research creation method they developed called, “collaborative ethnographic songwriting.”

Kael has a PhD in Education from the University of Toronto (Toronto, Canada) and a Masters from the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice at The University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). During their doctoral research, Kael investigated how original songs they composed and recorded using interviews they conducted with 2SLGBTQI+ families opened up dialogue with equity-seeking youth about gender, sexuality, embodiment, and relationships.
